Which wand should you choose?

Most wands in this collection are made by The Noble Collection, the company behind the long-running line of Harry Potter film replicas. The line grew from the main characters to wands for nearly every character in the films, and its distributor now lists more than 90 replica wands. With that many to choose from, it helps to decide first what you want the wand for.

Character wands, box by box

A Noble Collection character wand is a hand-painted resin replica of the prop used on set. The length follows the film prop, which is why Snape’s wand is listed at 13½ inches while Voldemort’s and Draco’s run to about 15. Harry’s own wand changed design after the first two films, and the “first wand” replicas copy the earlier version from Philosopher’s Stone.

You will usually find each wand in one of two boxes. The Ollivanders box recreates the narrow shop box from the films, with a velvet lining and a ribbon. The standard windowed box costs less and shows the wand through a clear window, which makes it a good choice if you plan to keep the wand in its packaging. Some newer “Character Edition” wands come in a collector’s box with a nameplate for wall mounting instead.

Two pieces in this collection go beyond a single wand. Lucius Malfoy’s walking stick is 46½ inches long and hides his 18-inch wand inside the shaft. The Triwizard Champions set puts the wands of Harry, Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour and Viktor Krum in a wooden display case with a clear cover.

Wand lore worth knowing before you buy

Some fans would rather own a wand that matches their own than a favourite character’s. According to the official Wizarding World site, Ollivander used three cores: unicorn hair for the most consistent magic, dragon heartstring for the most power, and phoenix feather for the greatest range of magic. The site also repeats Ollivander’s rule that “the wand chooses the wizard”. Knowing the core and wood of a character’s wand makes a replica a more personal gift for the right fan.

Buying tips

  • Check the listing names The Noble Collection as the maker if you want the film replica. Costume wands from other makers are a different, simpler product.
  • Read the box type in the title: “Ollivanders box” and “windowed box” versions of the same character are different listings at different prices.
  • For a young fan, an illuminating wand or a costume wand from the Harry Potter cosplay costumes collection is often a better fit than a fragile resin replica.
  • Pair a wand with a creature figure from the Magical Creatures collection or browse more ideas in Harry Potter collectibles and gifts.

Questions people ask

What are Noble Collection Harry Potter wands made of?

Their character wands are hand-painted resin replicas of the props used in the films. Lengths follow the film props, so most sit between about 13 and 15 inches.

What is the difference between the Ollivanders box and the standard box?

The Ollivanders box copies the shop box from the films and has a velvet interior and a ribbon. The standard version comes in a plainer box with a window so you can see the wand without opening it.

Do the illuminating wands need batteries?

Yes. The illuminating wands light up at the tip when you wave them and need two AAA batteries, which are not included.

Are these wands suitable for children?

They are collectibles rather than toys. The maker's distributor lists the boxed character wands for ages 14 and up, so check the age guidance on each listing before buying for a younger child.
