Which Super Mario toy fits which fan?

Most of this collection is LEGO Super Mario, the line LEGO makes with Nintendo. Its sets work in two ways. Some come with an interactive figure that reacts as it moves along a course. Others are plain builds that become interactive when you add a figure you already own. Knowing which is which saves a disappointed birthday morning.

Starter sets and the interactive figures

The starter sets are the way into LEGO Super Mario. According to LEGO, the interactive Mario reacts digitally as he travels from the Start Pipe to the Goal Pole and collects digital coins along the way. Luigi does the same in his own starter set. Each figure runs on 2 AAA batteries, which are not in the box, so buy a pack with the set. Building instructions are printed in the box and also available in the LEGO Super Mario app.

The Mario Kart set 72043 is a starter set too. It comes with its own interactive Mario and a Standard Kart with a drift feature and a shell launcher. When Mario sits in the kart, he plays Mario Kart sounds and visual effects. LEGO lists this set as retiring soon, so it may become harder to find.

The bigger Mario Kart builds

Baby Peach and Grand Prix (72036) has 823 pieces and three vehicles: the Wild Wiggler, the Landship and the Standard Bike. It adds a starting gate more than 7 inches high and a winner’s podium, with Baby Peach, Lakitu, Lemmy and Toad as figures.

Bowser’s Castle (72039) is the largest set here, at 1,068 pieces and about 10 inches high. Its walls fold out so karts can crash through, a Fire Bar spins, and a Thwomp drops onto the track. Neither set contains an interactive figure, and neither needs batteries. Retail listings point buyers to the starter sets if they want the sounds.

Beyond LEGO

The Super Mario Bros. Movie edition of Monopoly is made by Hasbro under licence from Nintendo. It has six plastic tokens, including a Super Mushroom, Toad’s frying pan and Peach’s crown, plus a cardboard Bowser token that moves around the board on its own.

Fans of the films should also know that JAKKS Pacific holds the master toy licence for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, as it did for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Its figures, playsets and plush carry the JAKKS name on the box.

Buying tips

  • Check the set number (five digits, such as 71439) in the listing title. It is the easiest way to be sure you are getting the official LEGO set.
  • If the child has no LEGO Mario, Luigi or Peach figure yet, start with a starter set and add a bigger build later.
  • Board games and LEGO sets suit different ages. The Monopoly is rated 8+, the starter sets 6+.
  • More gaming gifts are in Pokémon plush toys and Minecraft toys and games, or browse all game merchandise.

Questions people ask

Do I need an interactive figure for LEGO Super Mario sets?

Only for the sounds and digital coins. Sets such as Baby Peach and Grand Prix (72036) and Bowser's Castle (72039) build and play without one, but the interactive Mario, Luigi or Peach figure from a starter set adds the effects. Starter sets 71439 and 71440 and the Mario Kart set 72043 include a figure.

Do LEGO Super Mario sets need batteries?

The interactive figures do. Mario, Luigi and the Mario Kart Mario each take 2 AAA batteries, which are not included. Sets without an interactive figure need no batteries.

What age are LEGO Super Mario sets for?

The sets on this page range from 6+ for the Mario and Luigi starter sets to 9+ for Bowser's Castle. The age is printed on each box and listing.

How many players is the Super Mario Bros. Movie Monopoly for?

Hasbro lists it for 2 to 4 players aged 8 and up. Some store listings say 2 to 6, but the maker's own product page says 2 to 4.
